Cyber has a ledger.

On one side is the attacker: The cost of reconnaissance keeps falling. Credential testing can be automated. Phishing infrastructure can be rented. Malware tooling is increasingly commoditized. AI makes the work faster. Failed attempts are cheap. The same technique can be reused across thousands of targets. A successful foothold has enormous leverage. Lateral movement is repeatable. Detonation can be timed for maximum pressure.

Prosecution by law enforcement? Very rarely.

Now look at the defender’s ledger: Endpoint tools. Network tools. Identity tools. Cloud tools. SIEM ingestion. Alert triage. False positives. Managed services. Incident response retainers. Forensics. Legal review. Customer notification. Regulatory exposure. Business interruption. Reputation damage. Board reporting. Insurance friction. Ransom negotiation.

And ransom paid? Far too often.

This is the asymmetry at the center of cybersecurity. The attacker’s cost structure improves with scale. The defender’s cost structure gets worse with scale. More assets. More telemetry. More alerts. More exceptions. More humans in the loop. More meetings after the fact.

If every attacker action creates ten defender actions, the adversary is winning at go.

So perhaps the better question is not whether we can detect more. It is how can our strategy change the ledger.

Ridgeback is designed to change that ledger. Its synthetic Phantom resources put deceptive targets inside real network segments, turning reconnaissance into an encounter with defender-controlled terrain. Phantom interaction can trigger policy-driven isolation of the originating host, disrupting lateral movement at contact. Enforcement happens automatically, without waiting for analyst review or threat classification.

The aim is not another alert that creates more work for the defender. It is to make discovery cost the attacker progress—and contain the threat before it creates more downstream work. Deny. Deceive. Disrupt. With Ridgeback, change the ledger, change the fight.
